Plaza Midwood hosts neighborhood events like Winter Fling, Midwood Maynia, Fall Crawl & the Cankerworm Festival.  There are historical locations like The VanLandingham Estate and The Diamond, as well as new joints like Midwood Smokehouse, Bistro La Bon and The Peculiar Rabbit. Then there’s places that blend old and new, like Soul Gastrolounge and Snug Harbor.  There’s always something to do in this Hip Hood.

Originally a streetcar suburb in the 1920’s that once carried folks down the Plaza, this highly diverse hood is filled with beautiful examples of various architectural styles.  Once dominated by bungalows, the neighborhood now runs the gamut of styles from the historically preserved to modern Craftsman.

Its rough boundary runs along Central Ave. from Masonic to Hawthorne, from Hawthorne to Belvedere to The Plaza, over to Matheson Avenue. It neighbors the following communities: Belmont-Charlotte, Commonwealth-Morningside, Merry Oaks, Chantilly, Plaza-Shamrock, Country Club Heights and NoDa. With plenty of shops, eateries, and nightlife along The Plaza corridor and Central Ave, social time is just a short walk/bike ride away. Quick drive straight up Central brings you right into the heart of Uptown but most of the locals take the quicker trip along Parkwood Ave for a sub-10 minute commute to Trade and Tryon.

Since the mid-1990s, the area has seen a dramatic comeback as reinvestment has transformed once dilapidated homes into funky urban dwellings. It continued redevelopment has spilled over into other surrounding neighborhoods, and resulted in the overall renaissance of the former inner-ring suburbs of old Charlotte.

Plaza-Midwood’s Historic District is located in the western section of the neighborhood and is maintained by residents and business operators. The area along The Plaza, Thomas Avenue and parts of Pecan and Clement were designated as a Local Historic District in 1992. The district is now regulated by the Historic District Commission.
